Physical chemistry for example encompasses thermal issues (thermodynamics) involved in materials performance, and reaction rates involved in chemical processes; the compatibility of materials and environments including corrosion rates (electrochemistry), adhesive performance in composites and numerous products, moisture transport and water resistance; and the strength of metals, plastics, and ceramics and the influence of environment on strength and degradation, to name just a few areas. The physical sciences explain why failures happened at a more fundamental level of insight, and this more fundamental insight is compelling, often easier to understand, and sometimes essential to establishing cause and origin.
