Our investigations go beyond the typical engineering investigation. An engineering investigation addresses issues related to codes, standards, requirements, and design choices. We do this and more. More insight is often needed, insight that comes from the sciences that underlie the engineering disciplines. Physical chemistry for example encompasses thermal issues (thermodynamics) involved in materials performance, and reaction rates involved in chemical processes; the compatibility of materials and environments including corrosion rates (electrochemistry), adhesive performance in composites and numerous products, moisture transport and water resistance; and the strength of metals, plastics, and ceramics and the influence of environment on strength and degradation, to name just a few areas. The physical sciences explain why failures happened at a more fundamental level of insight, and this more fundamental insight is compelling, often easier to understand, and sometimes essential to establishing cause and origin.
We also offer a highly unique and valuable experience and consulting on the issues of the appropriateness of investigations methods used, the reliability of the data, and the degree to which the data meets standards of care that are applied by courts. We have led engineering organizations that conducted thousands of investigations annually. We have also led multi-million dollar R&D collaborations involving leading universities and companies that are industry leaders. Couple this experience with our expert witness experience, and you have a unique resource to help plan your litigation and assess the opposing parties to make good decisions.
John Fildes, Ph.D. leads our scientific and technical investigations. Click the links below to learn more about his approach to technical investigations and to read case studies, or click here to see Dr. Fildes' Bio and CV.
The primary desire in litigation, insurance claims resolution, and intellectual property disputes is to cut costs and improve outcomes. The only sure way to reduce costs is to resolve the case early, and the only sure way to improve outcomes when technical issues are involved is to have an investigation that provides superior insight in a manner that is actionable. Our consulting is based on achieving these goals. Our technical investigations use the overarching principles of the physical sciences (chemistry and physics), materials processing and performance, and tribology (the science of lubrication, friction, and wear) to guide the investigation so that the key underlying issues are identified early, the detailed analysis and testing is properly focused and produces reliable results, and the investigation can be explained with confidence and in a way that makes sense to non-technical people.
